If you’re in the mood for a cheap “new” computer (who isn’t?) you may want to check out Dell Outlet. Personally, I buy almost all of my computers—with the exception of laptops, which I buy from Lenovo—from Dell Outlet. Keep in mind, you’re not getting a new computer, but you’re getting the closest thing to one, and you can’t beat the price. You can buy laptops, desktops, monitors, and even Dell printers via the site.
What is Dell Outlet? Dell Outlet is a service provided directly through Dell where you can buy cheaper computers that were produced by Dell and later returned by customers. There is a varying degree of how “used” the computer is, but for the most part there are three main categories, ranging from most expensive to cheapest:
Previously Ordered New. This is as new as you’re going to get. These products were usually sent out to the owner, however, for one reason or another they were returned. Sometimes it may be related to a product that was made incorrectly, or the customer no longer wanted it and returned it. Whatever the case, you basically get a new computer at a much cheaper price. Keep in mind, this is the only category in which the computers have never been turned on.
Certified Refurbished. This category includes computers that have usually been used (i.e. turned on at least once) and then were returned. Because these computers have usually been used, the price is typically lower.
Scratch and Dent. This is probably a self-describing term, however, it doesn’t mean there is a defect with how the system operates. In fact, my most recent system came as a Scratch and Dent unit; I think I’ve put more scratches on it since I bought it than what it came with. Overall, this category should by far be the cheapest.
I recommend looking at the Scratch and Dent computers, as you probably won’t notice too much and you can’t beat the price, especially for a desktop. Plus, if you’re really that conscientious about what you’re computer looks like, you can always pay top-notch and get an Apple… :)
There are a couple caveats to this site however. First, because these are refurbished or returned computers, there is limited stock, so a particular computer may disappear in the blink of an eye. However, as quick as they disappear they also reappear, usually with better deals. Second, most of these systems are not “feature complete”, that is, they may not include speakers, monitors, and sometimes (though rarely) a keyboard and mouse, but once again, for the price, you can’t beat it.
Have a look for yourself. Of course, other computer companies offer this feature as well, including HP and Lenovo. However, I think Dell offers the widest availability of computers, both laptops and desktops, for the best price.
